Unused supply cost calculator
A larger vial can cost less per purchased milligram but more per milligram you actually use. Compare both using your confirmed quantities.
Enter positive amounts. Expected use cannot exceed the amount purchased.
Use the pharmacy’s instructions
Enter the amount you expect to use within the instructions provided for your prescription. This calculator does not determine a dose, treatment schedule, expiration date or period after opening. Ask the dispensing pharmacist if any of those are unclear; do not change treatment to reduce unused supply.
For a fictional $200 purchase containing 1,000 mg, using 800 mg allocates $40 of the purchase to unused supply. The effective price is $0.25 per usable mg, compared with $0.20 per purchased mg. You still pay $200: the unused value is an allocation, not a refund.
Check the quantity before comparing
If your label gives concentration and volume, the vial milligram calculator can multiply them. Read the guide to expiration and unused supply for the questions to ask before choosing a larger purchase.
